Transitioning from the physical to the digital space seamlessly for an annual event.
Since the inauguration of Yayasan MENDAKI’s annual Education Symposium, Idea Ink has been graphic recording presentations about early childhood education and development. Over the years, we played around with different formats, from drawing on physical boards onsite to graphic recording remotely from home amidst the pandemic in 2020.
We were honoured to be invited as the official graphic recorders for the inaugural edition of the symposium! The holistic symposium covered a wide range of topics, including the role of drawing in children’s learning and development, technology’s involvement in child’s play, and fostering healthy eating habits for picky eaters.
Our black boards filled up with white and yellow illustrations were reminiscent of old-school classroom blackboards. Displayed on easels, they offered participants a digestible recap of the presentations, while also serving as the perfect backdrop for group photos and interviews.

2018’s symposium focused on the themes of innovation and technology in preschool education. Educators and experts shared about a variety of initiatives that empower children — maker spaces cultivate critical thinking and problem-solving skills, while coding education nurtures logical and sequential thinking. Much light was also shed on the usefulness of data gathering in school, and the impact technology can have on children development.
Post-event, we blended the physical with the digital by digitising our physical graphic recordings and animating all 16 of them! The animated GIFs made for a more engaging experience when they were shared online.
In 2019, we experimented with a mix of physical and digital graphic recordings. Some presentations were graphic recorded on the black boards that have become a familiar sight at the symposium, while some were digitally illustrated.
The theme of schooling transition was tackled from different angles — from how parents can help children cope with changes mentally, academically or physically, to how educators can engage and manage parents’ concerns.
In 2020, in light of the COVID-19 situation, the Symposium moved online! The presentations were streamed live on Zoom and Facebook Live. We adapted accordingly by graphic recording digitally for the full symposium from home! Our illustrators tuned in remotely, and captured the key insights on their digital tablets.
