Since 2018, we’ve had the opportunity to partner with S&P Global, constantly showcasing our unique visual storytelling approach at their prestigious annual energy conference.

This year, as we celebrate the 40th anniversary of the APPEC, we were invited by S&P Global Commodity Insights to create a solution that captures the essence of the event in a way that fosters engagement and sparks conversations among attendees.

Our 2024 solution? ‍

A bold, visually striking 11-metre hand-drawn sketch wall featuring over 100 hand-drawn portraits and 70 visual summaries.

1. Hand-drawn Portraits

To add a personal touch to the event materials, we prepared over 100 hand-drawn portraits of speakers prior to the conference. Drawn based on reference photos, these portraits allowed us to focus on capturing each individual's personality in an authentic and illustrative style.

The portraits were made to complement the visual summaries, helping to humanise the complex topics and making it easier for attendees to connect with the speakers on a personal level!

2. From Complex Ideas to Captivating Visual Stories

This year's APPEC featured five types of sub-conferences: Strategic Conference, Chemical Conference, Hydrogen Conference, Carbon Markets Conference, and Shipping & Bunker Conference.

With a solid foundation in content summarisation, fast-paced drawing, and technical knowledge from a multitude of disciplines, our team of illustrators worked collaboratively to create over 70 captivating visual summaries based on key insights from each session!

Paired with hand-drawn portraits of each speaker, the visual summaries captured their overall stances and perspectives, fostering a deeper connection between the audience and the ideas presented.

3. A Visual Landscape that Fosters Interaction

The completed visual summaries were then displayed on an 11-metre sketch wall, which became a focal point of the event. To enhance the overall aesthetic, we prepared a custom visual motif prior to the event. These carefully crafted visual motifs were adapted from the theme within the APPEC 2024 horizon, seamlessly framing key insights and adding a playful visual touch.

As attendees passed by, they engaged with the artwork—discussing the topics with colleagues, taking photos, and using the visuals as conversation starters. The sketch wall became a dynamic space where ideas converged, meaningful connections were made, and it functioned exactly as we intended, fostering engagement and collaboration among participants!
